Henry Rifle, 1860 - Steel

(Ref: G1030G)

There had been attempts to produce repeater rifles and muskets as early as the 16th century. Notwithstanding the success enjoyed by the cap-and-ball revolvers of Colt and others, it took the unitary cartridge containing priming, charge and projectile to make the repeater rifle a reality.

When Oliver Winchester set up the New Haven Arms Co., the brought Tyler Henry in to run it. Henry's first act was to design a repeating rifle worked by an under-lever that ejected the spent round, chambered a fresh one and then cocked the rifle.

The 1892 Winchester rifle, descendant of the Henry and 1866 “Yellow Boy” rifles, was made from 1892 until 1941 and total production was in excess of one million pieces. Many variations and calibers were introduced over the course of the 50 years production, but the basic design was largely unaltered and the fact that many are still in use today as hunting rifles bears testimony to the reliability and longevity of the gun. (Ref: G1140L)

Developed from the Henry rifle, the 1866 Winchester lever-action repeater has passed into legend as “The Gun That Won The West”. During its production run, from 1866 to 1898, about 170,000 pieces were made in Winchester's Connecticut factory. The gun fired a .44 caliber rimfire round from the tubular magazine located underneath the barrel. This non-firing version clearly demonstrates the workings of the lever-action loading system.

Kentucky Flintlock Rifle, USA, 19th C.

(Ref: G1201)

The name “Kentucky Rifle” is largely a misnomer - they were primarily made in Pennsylvania, although Maryland and Virginia gunsmiths contributed a fair share. The “Kentucky” name came about as a result of the Battle of New Orleans, which was substantially won by these rifles, in the hands of two thousand frontiersmen from Kentucky. While the design was influenced by the German Jaeger rifles and the slender English and French fowling pieces of the early 18th Century, the Kentucky is uniquely American. This non-firing version shows the graceful lines for which the Kentucky became renowned.

Enfield Musket, England, 1853

(Ref: G1067)

Both Federal and Confederate troops used the rifle throughout the war and almost one million were shipped to the combattants from several British manufacturers. The gun was widely regarded as well made and very accurate. The .577 caliber of the gun allowed the use of ammunition made for the .58 caliber American-made arms that were standard for both armies.
